A shop in Mabuchi can have a website, an Instagram, a banner on the expressway and a WhatsApp status, and still be invisible when someone types the service and the city. The owner’s conclusion is usually “Google is against small businesses”. The file, more often, is quieter: the site cannot be indexed cleanly, the title tag says Home, the Google Business Profile points at a different URL, or the page that should rank does not exist.
Indexed is not ranked. Ranked is not chosen.
Indexing means Google has a copy of the URL. Ranking means that copy is allowed into a particular results page. Chosen means a human looked at your title and description and preferred them to the six other clinics. People collapse all three into “we are not coming up”. The fix is different for each.
If Search Console says the important URLs are “Crawled — currently not indexed”, or “Excluded by noindex”, or stuck behind a view-all-posts parameter, you do not have a ranking problem yet. You have a filing problem. Writing ten more blog posts will not help a door that is locked.
The usual Nigerian version of this mess
The homepage title is the business slogan, or the word Home, or the name of the page builder. None of those are what a person types. The site is on HTTP for some URLs and HTTPS for others. www and non-www both work and Google has to guess. The WordPress site is installed in /wordpress/ or /new/ from a migration that never finished. A security plugin is blocking crawlers because someone ticked a box that sounded professional.
Then there is the Lagos-only copy for an Abuja business. If every heading, every testimonial and the footer address insist on Ikeja, you should not be surprised when Maps and Search treat you as an Ikeja business that sometimes answers the phone from the FCT. Google is not a mind-reader. It is a pattern-reader.
If the homepage and the Google Business Profile tell two different stories, Google will believe neither of them fully.
GBP is not a website
A complete Google Business Profile helps people who already want a place near them. It does not replace service pages. “Website design Abuja”, “hotel in Mabuchi”, “school fees in Gwarinpa” are page-shaped questions. If the only URL you have is a homepage that tries to be every answer, you will lose to whoever wrote the specific one.
Connect the profile to the real website. Use the same name, address and phone. Put the city on the pages that deserve it, not as a keyword necklace. Then wait longer than a weekend. Local results move. They do not move because you posted “please like our page” in a WhatsApp group.
What we look at first
Search Console, the sitemap, robots.txt, canonicals, the homepage title, the service URLs, and whether the important pages return 200. Then the Google Business Profile, because a perfect website attached to a dead listing still loses the map pack. Then content: does a page exist for the thing people actually type?
Run the website health check if you want the obvious public-page gaps in writing. Run the profile checklist if the map pack is the wound. Then send both. You do not need to diagnose it in developer language. “People in Abuja cannot find us and the site looks fine on my laptop” is a brief.
